Apple Thinks Ram is worth 6x More
December 30th, 2007 at 2:16 pmAfter buying two 2.8 ghz 24 inch iMac’s for the holidays, I decided to upgrade both iMac’s to 4 gigs of ram each. While searching for the which type of ram they take on apple.com, I saw apple selling their overpriced ram…

I couldn’t believe the price! $1,000 per computer. I did some comparing on Pricegrabber.com and bought 4 Gigs of ram for both computers for $320 vs $2000.

Need instructions on how to upgrade your ram?
Check out these excellent videos from Other World Computing and great prices also.

Haha, yeah I upgraded my Macbook Pro to 4GB a couple of weeks ago for about $120 or so… Compare that to Apple’s prices! There are similar price hikes on the hard drives from Apple when upgrading through the Apple Store.

About memory, if I was to upgrade my MacBook’s ram from 2GB to 4GB by ordering ram from, not Apple, and installing it myself, do I violate the terms of my APP?

Did some reading and it appears it does not void the apple care warranty, neither does expansion cards or user installable parts. Keep in mind if you break anything while installing, then warranty will not cover that.

Other World Computing is even better: $96 per computer for the 2×2GB, which makes Apple’s prices about 10X. And yet, I’m sure there are people who buy it from Apple…

Thank you, I was worried about voiding my warranty.

Apple’s pricing system has a severe problem, this is a perfect example of it.

Apple has always charged an arm and a leg for RAM. That’s why no one buys it from them!

The difference don’t look very dramatic.
Maybe I can buy a 2GB stick if I have some money burning a whole in my pocket, complete the set later.
