When Expectations are Set Too High

Response to the sites which call Macworld 2008 a failure:

Macworld definitely was not a failure by any means. Sure, I would change some minor things about the Macbook Air and maybe a few other things but lets get real, our expectations have gotten way out of whack.

Apple can’t release a new amazing product every year such as the iPhone or iPod. I believe Apple put most of it’s time and effort into movie rentals this year, which could really change the movie industry. I’m sure this was quite the challenge to get all movie studios to agree on a rental model.

Let’s now talk about the macbook air, you can’t expect an amazingly slim device to be the “all powerful laptop”. When you have something that small, expect some kind of sacrifices. The Macbook Air is great for the average user in my opinion, maybe not for technology geeks such as ourselves. I bought my wife one because all she does is surf the net, checks email and a few minor things. This is what I consider the average user.

I think we can still agree Apple has the best OS, Portable Media Player (the iPod), phone (iPhone, maybe not the service), high end laptops and desktops.

This is something no other company comes close to.

I agree that Apple is well above other companies at the moment for the products it makes. The MacBook Air is definitely a step in the right direction. I was hoping this year we would see new cinema displays. I can’t comment on the actual keynote speech until they post it for download. Overall, I agree that this keynote was not a failure, but nothing especially groundbreaking.

Yes I agree with you maybe not the best keynote, but not a failure by any means.

I also agree that Apple is leading other companies in terms of design, customer support, and staying recent. Their achilles heel seems to be their actual fans; fans set expectations unreasonably high so an otherwise great product - isn’t good enough. With the popularity of OS X growing the idea of the MacBook Air makes sense, but not the price. It is a capable machine for the average user, though no body else. A MacBook is no strain or hassle to carry: I own one, I know.
